Dublin Tunnel

Dublin Tunnel

The Dublin Tunnel (Tollán Bhaile Átha Cliath) opened to traffic on December 20th 2006. It is a twin bore tunnel of 4.5km in length with a height clearance of 4.65m and forms part of the M50 motorway, completing the northern part of the C-Ring around Dublin. The Tunnel Toll Plaza, located at the southern end has a dedicated left hand truck lane which ensures free flowing passage for Heavy Goods Vehicles.

Tunnel Facts & Figures

Construction of the Tunnel began in January 2001 and was completed and opened in December 2006. The aim of providing a dedicated route for Heavy Good Vehicles, – trucks and buses was hugely successful and at the end of 2022 the Tunnel had aided over 100 million journeys to and from the Port and city centre.

The total traffic volume through the Tunnel in 2022 was over 8 ½ million vehicles; or over 23,000 vehicles on average each day.  Around 16,000 of these vehicles are classed as HGV – trucks & vans – who would otherwise have travelled through the city centre. This figure illustrates the Tunnel’s impact on congestion, safety and air quality for Dublin City.

Dublin Tunnel links Dublin Port to the M50 and the National Roads Network giving road users a journey time of approximately only six minutes from Dublin Port in the heart of the city to the M50 interchange at Junction 2, Coolock.

The Tunnel’s internal height is designed for safe passage of HGV’s height of 4.65m with a width of 2.9m and a length of 25 metres. The Motorway Operations Control Centre team monitor the Tunnel 24/7 working to keep the city, Port, and other links to adjoining networks flowing smoothly and safely.

Funding

Funding for Dublin Tunnel was provided by the National Development Plan and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) formerly the National Roads Authority (NRA). The project represented a significant investment by the State in a piece of infrastructure designed to take the majority of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) traffic out of the city centre.

ERTO manages all processes associated with the operation and maintenance of the Dublin Tunnel. This includes toll collection, traffic management, tunnel safety management, emergency and contingency planning, equipment and infrastructure inspection, as well as complex maintenance and capital renewals.
