Traffic Management

ERTO operates the Motorway Operations Control Centre (MOCC) on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland on East Wall Road, Dublin 3. This advanced facility houses both the Motorway Traffic Control and Tunnel Control for the Dublin Tunnel and the Jack Lynch Tunnel.

ERTO operates and maintains the Dublin Tunnel and Jack Lynch Tunnel and monitors and manages more than 1,200 kilometres of motorway and dual carriageway across Ireland. We operate our service in a state-of-the-art Motorway Operations Control Centre (MOCC). Here a 3m-high, 15m-wide, 4.2-million-pixel video wall displays real-time feeds from the motorway CCTV camera network. The video wall allows operators to spot potential issues, enlarge views of incidents as they occur, and study CCTV images in detail before making decisions.

Motorway Traffic Control Team

The Motorway Traffic Control team plays a vital role in overseeing the safe and effective traffic management of approximately 1200 kilometers of Ireland’s motorways and dual carriageways. The motorway traffic team use specialised control systems and can transmit messages via roadside electronic signs (VMS) to motorists, coordinate roadwork schedules, and respond to incidents. The team supervises and oversees more than 65 million vehicle journeys each year.

Traffic control systems encompass

  • Advanced traffic management systems
  • Electronic messaging to motorists
  • Emergency Roadside Telephone network
  • Roadworks scheduling
  • Incident management

The control systems also accommodates the upgrade and transformation of the entire national roads network operation including,

Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) are designed with the goal of enhancing both road safety and traffic flow using technologies like CCTV and AIMs. These systems facilitate the real-time detection of incidents and allow operators to issue advanced notifications to approaching drivers through variable message signs (VMS).

Emergency Roadside Telephones

The Motorway Traffic Control team additionally offers roadside support to drivers via a network of approximately 1600 ERT telephones. These solar-powered units are strategically placed at one-kilometre intervals throughout the motorway network.

The Motorway Traffic Control team undergo emergency response training to help motorists in connecting with the relevant service provider or emergency services as needed.

Tunnel Control Team

The Tunnel Control team in the MOCC oversee the operations of both the Dublin Tunnel & Jack Lynch Tunnel. More than 140 dedicated cameras and information monitoring systems feed information to the MOCC facilitating the safes journeys by road users.

Dublin Tunnel is equipped with dedicated parking bays for vehicles in emergency situations. Each of these bays is equipped with emergency telephones connected directly to the MOCC operators
